And people say Wasps are naturally aggressive and monstrous.
The whole nest follows the mood of the founding female, i.e. their mom. If she’s calm, they’re calm, and she can’t afford to send her babies into battle at the drop of a hat so she naturally errs on peaceful behavior until there’s a clear danger.
If you keep getting a little closer every time, and keep your behavior gentle, she’ll get so used to you that the whole colony will treat you as a non-threat like this, or a “friend” if they get used to receiving food in your presence.
You can see that this is a transplanted colony in a glass tank, there are people who keep pet wasp nests!
There’s a method for “capturing” a wasp nest by using a super soaker full of ice water to put them all in hibernation, then cutting the nest down and gluing it where you want it. Definitely more fun and nicer than just killing them all.
